Binding Ties The Sentinel Wars Shannon K Butcher Books

I wanted to like this story more than I did. Honestly, I tried. Especially after the last book which took place nowhere on earth. I *needed* to like this one more. Suffice to say, this fell short with me. Maybe because I basically despised Lyka.

For a woman who was so strong and kickass (or so I thought). She just felt so dang whiny throughout 93% of the book. It was seriously only in maybe the last two chapters that she had any sense of redemption. And even then it was tepid at best. I really didn't like her.

Joseph, on the other hand, was pretty amazing. I wanted him to have the most amazing mate. I felt like he deserved it because he seemed like an extremely selfless and kindhearted man. Did he get the kind of mate he deserved? I'm not sure. I still don't like Lyka even after having finished the book.

Is this a standalone book? No, it's not a book that should be read as a first. This is really a continuation of the previous novels except for book 8. You really could get away with not reading that book. Since at this point, I have absolutely NO idea how it even fits into this world, other than two characters who were previous books finally get a HEA.
If you tried reading this book without the rest, I think you're going to be scratching your head a lot.

Will I read the rest of the series? Yes. I will. I want to know what happens with Justice and Logan. I want to know more about the Slayers since we didn't really learn all that much in this book. I want to know what happens to Eric. Let's face it, I generally like this world and want to know more.

Would I recommend this book? I'd definitely recommend to those who have read the series. And I might even recommend the series itself (except for book eight). But I wouldn't recommend this book on its own.

Binding Ties The Sentinel Wars Shannon K Butcher Books Reviews

It was so good, I bought the whole series (about 12 books), read them from book 1 and read Binding Ties again.
Absolutely awesome- not to be missed!!
I have so enjoyed reading & re-reading this entire series- I love all the characters- and find the story line is fresh & exciting -
Though the ending was fairly abrupt, I like lyka. She is Strong and mean. Vicious due to her slayer side. She has very Lttle fear, and while she used Joseph at first she didn't take long to find her feelings for him. I think she is the perfect match for him. Not afraid of what will come and still Bright and full of courage. What I am looking forward to is Nicholas' story. And I am curious to see if Tori is his mate. That would be amazing to read.
Joseph is a character that shows up in almost all the books. At the leader of the Theronai, he's often the one issuing commands that change the fate of the other characters. But in this book, we get his story. His love for Lyka and how that compliments and conflicts with his duty as leader, are very well done. Lyka's struggle also very plausible and I enjoyed watching Lyka overcome her flaws. Butcher does a good job of raising the stacks - Lyka's brother, Eric, walks through Hell, and I want to find out how he survives. Between that and the mystery at the end, as well as the additional allusions to other couples whose stories haven't been told (Tori and Nicholas, Ronan and Justice) - I'm desperate for the next book!
I loved Joseph and hated Lyka. Up to the very end she was unwilling to give Joseph a chance. She used him throughout the book then suddenly, for reasons only the author knows, Lyka found she loved him. I did not enjoy the story, the quest for Lyka's brother and I didn't care if Lyka lived or died except that it would hurt Joseph. I only wished that Joseph had found a more suitable mate, not one who cared only about herself and almost nothing about him no matter how hard he tried. The ending didn't redeem her at all. The only positive is that she will save Joseph a lot of pain and suffering by tying herself to him, but otherwise Lyka was useless.
This is the 9th full length book in Shannon Butcher's generally excellent Sentinel Wars series. If you haven't read any of the earlier books, you would not want to start with this one as the series has a complicated story arc with a large cast of characters with each book usually featuring multiple secondary storylines and POV's.

Binding Ties is the story of Joseph, the leader of the Theronai, and Lyka Phelan, the sister of the leader of the Slayers. In an earlier book, Lyka was brought to the Theronai compound, Dabyr, to serve as a sort of hostage for peace between the two races and Joseph's ward, Carmen, was shipped off to the Slayers to serve a similar purpose. When the Slayer settlement is attacked and destroyed by the Synestryn and her brother Eric kidnapped with a number of Slayer children, she runs to the rescue with a reluctant Joseph going along.

It was fun to be back in Dabyr as last year's "Willing Sacrifice" took us off-world with Grace and Torr and there was virtually no interaction with our usual cast of Theronai, Slayers and Sanguinar. Joseph is a great hero. Smart, loyal, gorgeous and so very, very lonely. He has been massively attracted to Lyka since she arrived at Dabyr and is amazed and thankful for the opportunity to make her his. The Synestryn are up to their usual evil ways and Ms. Butcher ups the "ick" factor yet again in the treatment of poor, abducted Eric. So, there is lots of action and plenty of mortal peril as Joseph and Lyka race to save Eric and the children and explore all that smoldering attraction they feel towards one another. We also get updates on the Sanguinar (Logan, Hope, and Tynan make appearances) as well as on Ronan who is searching for Justice, the woman he is obsessed with finding and who saved his life earlier in the series.

So, what's the problem? Why only 3 stars? Lyka. I really couldn't stand her. I liked her even less than previous heroines Lexie and Jackie which is saying something. Lyka is difficult, angry, and obnoxious, behaving foolishly on more than one occasion. She only slightly redeems herself at the very end and there wasn't enough of an epilogue and interaction between her and Joseph to soften my opinion of her. Overall, she pretty much ruined the book and I actually felt sorry that wonderful Joseph is now stuck with her. So, while I'll keep reading the Sentinel Wars, this was definitely not a favorite and not one that will ever make it to the top of the re-read pile. It seems like Ronan and Justice could be in line for the next full length book. I only hope that Justice is not anything like Lyka.
